How to create a cascading drop down list in Sharepoint 2010
Today I am going to explain you how to create a list with filtered lookup columns, based on information in previous columns. Check out SharePoint Cascaded Lookup from SharePointBoost.
Image from SharePointBoost
The software looks great. I haven’t tried it, but it does offer some great extra functionality.
Unfortunately, this piece of software is very expensive for small companies that only need this for a single form on SharePoint.
So I am going to show you how to create such a list without the need of buying this piece of software. I covered it into a lot of steps, but no programming is needed. The only things you need, are a SharePoint 2010 environment, InfoPath 2010 and this tutorial
!
For this small tutorial, I will create a simple room-reservation list for a company existing out of multiple physical buildings. I will not explain about how to create a reservation system, I only use it as a example to show you how to filter data based on a previous selected item.
The result of this tutorial will be a form where you can select a physical location. After you made your selection, only those rooms for that building will be shown.
Again, i covered this into a lot of steps. But after you have done this a couple of times, you do not need expensive software and you can create filtered lookup forms yourself!
Acer notebook bios update on Windows 7
Here is a post about my BIOS upgrade trouble. I have posted this because I have a work-arround that I think a lot of people will help out.
I had problems upgrading the BIOS of my notebook, a Acer Aspire 5633WLMi with Windows 7 x64 installed. I downloaded the new bios installation (versien 3.60) from the Acer website. Its a zip file (BIOS_v3.60.zip) that includes three files:
- BL50360A.WPH
- flash32.exe
- Readme.txt
When running flash32.exe, it extracts the necessary files to C:\Windows\Temp\WINPHLASH. After that, SWinFlash.exe is started.
It gives a error:
Cannot load driver C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\PHLASHNT.SYS. Please check your accounts, if you have no administrator privilege, please login again!
Error code: 1275
My account is an administrator account, so that is not the problem. The operating system version in combination with the 64 bit operating system type is just not supported. I searched all over the internet for a solution, but most given solutions were just to unreliable or not really practical. One says you could use a floppy dos boot disk, but then again you need a floppy drive witch i do not have. Another given solution is to reinstall XP 32 bit and use that to upgrade the BIOS. I am not going to reinstall my operating system for a BIOS update!
So what did i do… I gave Hiren’s BootCD a try. I downloaded v.10.4 from http://www.hirensbootcd.net/download.html, and burned it on a CD. Make sure you haven’t emptied the temp folder (C:\Windows\Temp\WINPHLASH) where the software was extracted to, cause you need it later on.
When booting from the CD, a small startup menu showed me the option to start a ‘Mini Windows XP’. I selected this option, and used Explorer to navigate to C:\Windows\Temp\WINPHLASH. From there i started SWinFlash.exe, and guess what… I successfully updated the BIOS!
Remember that this is not a recommended / supported procedure to flash your BIOS!
